“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, KJV
You've seen it on signs at football games and on the bottom of fast-food cups. But familiar doesn't mean understood. Read slowly, this verse is the whole gospel in one sentence.
A conversation at night
Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus, a respected religious leader who came to Him secretly at night with questions. Jesus' answer wasn't a rule to follow. It was a gift to receive.
"God so loved"
It starts with love, not with what we've done. God's love comes first.
"The world"
Not just good people, not just religious people. Everyone. Including you.
"He gave"
Love that costs nothing proves nothing. God gave the most precious thing He had: His Son.
"Whosoever believeth"
The door is open to anyone. Not whoever earns it, but whoever trusts Him.
"Everlasting life"
The story doesn't end at the grave. That's the hope this verse holds out to every person who reads it.
Why it's on Sacred Guidance
