“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
John 13:34, KJV
"Love one another" sounds like something we already know. But Jesus called it a new commandment. So what made it new?
The night before the cross
Jesus said these words at the Last Supper. He had just washed His disciples' feet, the job of the lowest servant. Judas had just walked out to betray Him. Peter would deny Him before morning. Jesus knew all of it, and this is what He chose to say.
What made it new
The old law said, "Love your neighbour as yourself." Jesus set a higher standard: as I have loved you. Not as much as you love yourself, but as much as He loves you, all the way to the cross.
Love that goes first
Jesus loved people before they deserved it, before they understood it, even before they loved Him back. That's the love we're called to: not waiting for others to earn it, but going first.
How the world will know
The next verse says: "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." Not by our arguments or our logos, but by how we treat each other.
What it means for you
Think of one person who's hard to love right now. What would it look like to love them the way Christ loves you, today, in one small way?
Why we made Angel Archer
An archer has one job: to hit the target. The angel on this design aims at one thing, and the words beneath it say what: love one another.
Every design carries a verse.
